In honor of Kaspar’s impending toilet training, I’m initiating a ‘Pee is for Potties’ morale campaign here on Alt-Mama.com. Cuz let’s face it: our kids get all the rah-rah-rah’s they need to make this transition, but parents are people, too. (Have you gotten your positive reinforcement today?) I’m thinking a series of subject-specific giveaways should keep the potty party hopping along.

So let’s kick this thing off with an organic Mattress Protector Pad from Naturepedic! If you win, you can take your pick of size (twin, full or queen) and opt in or out on the waterproof front. We’ve got the waterproof one on Kaspar’s bed (his bed is in our room, and I sleep in it with him, but… it’s still ‘his’ bed. That’s the idea, anyway). It gives him a nice, non-sweaty night’s sleep that vinyl and rubber pads won’t, and provides extra layers of organic materials between his skin/airways (he sleeps face-down, butt-up… love that) and his mattress. It also blocks dust mites and other allergens. And pee. Which is the focus of this fine giveaway series.

By the way, I have not been paid to pimp this product. Naturepedic sent me a pad so I could give it a dry (make that wet) run; I wouldn’t want to give you something lame and be a morale party pooper (you caught that, right? Pooper?). And I am, officially, a fan. The pad you get will be new, though. Not the one Kaspar's peed on. Just want to be sure we're clear.

I want to mention, too, that this is a really-actually green product, and not just greenwashed for marketing. Gotta watch out for that. The pad is free of Pthalates, Vinyl, PVC, and Latex, and is Greenguard certified. Let’s hear it for companies caring about our kids, with an extra encore for Naturepedic for hooking you up with one of these puppies. If you win the giveaway, that is.

You want to win? Here’s how it’s done: leave a comment below with a potty training tip, anecdote, worst fear, best success… whatever goes pee in the night. Anything on-topic will do. I’ll have Aaron pick one of your names from a hat on Friday, September 9, and announce the lucky winner in the comments section, too. Don’t forget to put your email address in the comments form (it won’t be published) so that I can get in touch with you behind-the-scenes on all of the specifics (size request, etc.).

Good luck!

My daughter has been potty training in earnest for a few months, but we started talking about it with her when she was a year and a half (she's 2 now). She didn't show much enthusiasm at first but now asks to sit on the potty herself, so we sit, and sit. We have potty books right in the bathroom to get her in the mood, too. She still wears a diaper at night but we will make the nighttime change eventually. A waterproof pad will be a must! I hope to win this organic one!

I got my little girl a potty for her 1st birthday, over-zealous much? :) She sits on it, before bath, every few days or so but she's never actually peed. My ultimate goal/plan is so start at 18 months, she's 15 months now. This pad would be great for us because potty training is literally right around the corner. Thank you!

Well, my baby boy just turned 1 last month so unlike most I am hoping that potty training is a long way off. I don't want to start until he is good and ready! (I have heard horror stories of trying and trying)lol! I'm hoping by putting it off we won't have to train as long. That may be only wishful thinking though. HA! My MIL claims that my husband was trained at 14 mths. I don't know about all that. But I would love to have the mattress waiting until he is ready or I may use it now since we co-sleep and sometimes his diaper leaks. Uh-oh!

I wish I had a good story, but my 3 yr old just does not want to have anything to do with the potty. She sits on it and reads/plays for as long as 20 minutes, but still prefers to go in her diaper.:(

We’ve been letting our son run around without a diaper and encourage him to sit on the potty and try for about 6 months now (he just turned 2). About 2 months ago, while running around naked he squatted down and pooped on the floor! Sure, he’s peed on the floor before, no big deal, peed in a potty a couple of times as well, but poop? Never! He kind of freaked out, and so did I and my husband. We were laughing so hard that we scared my poor boy. I did manage to get it on video, poop on the floor and all.

My daughter is 17 months old and we are just limbering up to the whole potty-training phase of life. We bought her a brand new red potty with a teddy on it, and try all sorts of PR around peeing in her potty. Every time we put her on it, we exclaim: "Hey, what fun to pee in your potty!" with Disney smiles on our faces. Once she peed on the floor, we also exclaimed with Disney smiles, "Oh what fun, you peed on the floor!"

Parenthood makes us do silly things. I suspect that the real silliness has only just begun ...

While potty training a little girl I was a full time live-in nanny for, I was a little anxious to stop washing diapers and making the liquid mix for the cloth wipes that we might have a started a tad too soon. Never the less, we began at 17 months, and she caught on right away. Though when she sat on the potty, I could not figure out how she would manage to pee on the floor! Is she sitting far enough back? Check. Is there anything in the potty? Nope. She was squeezing her legs together so tightly that the pee was coming up them and down onto the floor. So instead of washing diapers and wipes and mixing the liquid stuff, I was giving her 8-15 baths per day and doing lots of laundry full of urine-soaked towels and washcloths. Not to mention scrubbing the bathroom floor.

Hi! My daughter is 18 months old. She loves to come to the bathroom with me, and has recently started announcing when she has pee or poop in her diaper. I think she's ready to start training, I just need our new baby (due in 4.5 weeks!) to get here before I can focus on potty training. This pad would be a wonderful addition to the bed we plan to get her when her new brother takes over her crib :)

My son is 18 months, and we haven't started the potty training yet. He seems to 'get' things fairly quickly, so I'm somewhat optimistic, but I know it can be a tough process ... we'll see!

Thanks for your great responses, everyone! What a crazy deal potty training is... and so different for everyone. I'll let you know how Kaspar does once we get things under way on this end. He's definitely already peed on the floor (and on me) countless times. If the diaper's off, it's only a matter of minutes until something like that goes down.

In the meantime, I'm excited to announce our lucky randomly selected giveaway winner: Megan! Congrats! On the new baby, and the new mattress pad! I hope it helps make your little girl comfy and content in her very-own bed as the baby takes over the crib territory. I'll email you for your mailing address and we'll get you hooked up before D-day, for sure.

Thanks to everyone else for playing, and stick around; as I mentioned, I've got more potty-pertinent giveaways in the pipeline. TBA. :-)

xoxo Taylor Alt-Mama
